Translator Tuesday October 2025
These are casual virtual meetups to talk about translation, mainly between Japanese and English. We share experiences, questions, readings, strategies, tools, travails, and trivia, with different conversations every time. New participants are most welcome! The hour-long sessions, moderated by Daniel Morales, start at 8:00 p.m. JST on the first Tuesday of the month. For brief reports of previous meetings, see here.
Coming up:
October 7 Specialization can be an important aspect of translation, but it isn't the end all be all. There are many generalists who are comfortable with a wide range of material. This month we'll talk specialization vs generalization. How do you specialize in a certain field? What benefits does it have? What are the drawbacks? How do you promote yourself as a generalist? Come to learn more, and also to share your stories of specialization in translation.
November 4: Professional organizations are at the heart of translation, whether they are companies seeking translation, publishers publishing translations, or membership associations supporting the profession. This month we'll discuss professional bodies that are useful to know and be part of as a translator (including SWET!). What organizations are best to be involved in? Are there any that translators should be more aware of?
Please note that advance registration is required for each session. Click on the link below, then select the desired date from the pull-down menu. If you are interested but not sure you can make it, feel free to sign up and attend if you can. Participants are also free to arrive or depart while the session is in progress.
