The talk will be recorded and made available on SWET’s YouTube channel.
For this month’s SWET-wide online gathering, we’ll talk to John Marshall, a textile artist and collector who has turned his fifty-six-year passion for katazome (rice paste-resist) dyeing not only into acclaimed designs and textile works, but into a profession and medium for teaching and sharing. Attendees may wish to review his website, which is neatly equipped with a sitemap for easy navigation, before the talk. His bio there chronicles the events of his career since his first visit to Japan at age 17 in 1970 and describes his current base of activities in Mendocino, California. For this talk, we’ll ask him especially about his thoughts and experiences on writing and publishing on Japanese textiles and inquire about his own work. The talk will open with an interview and end with a question-and-answer session.
