Cathy Layne first came to Japan in 1996 as a teacher on an exchange from London in her native UK and continued to teach for several years while studying for her MA in Japanese Studies before moving on to freelance translation and editing. She became an editor at Kodansha International in 2004. After KI closed down in 2011, she returned to teaching for a few years and eventually took up a position as editor for Tuttle at its Singapore office and since 2025 at its Tokyo office.

For the first hour of our meeting, Cathy will share stories from her long career as a book and translation editor and other activities relating to Japan. The second hour will be given over to discussion and networking among participants.

Note about food and drink: The Book House Café won’t be open when we meet, but you are welcome—and encouraged—to bring your own refreshments (purchased items only, please, to ensure we abide by venue rules). We’re asked to provide our own utensils and take our own trash home.
