Translator Tuesdays October 2026

These are casual virtual meetups to talk about translation, mainly between Japanese and English. We share experiences, questions, readings, strategies, tools, travails, and trivia, with different conversations every time. New participants are most welcome! The one-hour sessions, moderated by Daniel Morales, start at 8:00 p.m. JST on the first Tuesday of the month. See this link for brief reports of previous Translator Tuesday meetings.

October 6: For Translator Tuesday in 十月 (jūgatsu), we will be celebrating “自由月” (jiyūgatsu) and holding one of our “wild card” topics. We try to do this a few times each year as a way for participants to socialize and share whatever is currently on their minds. We look forward to seeing you online!

November 3

In November, we'll feature SWET member Cody Poulton discussing the translation of drama and theatre. Cody taught Japanese language, literature, and theater at the University of Victoria from 1988 to 2020 and served as Resident Director of the Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies from 2022 to July 2026. He has translated kabuki as well as modern Japanese fiction and drama. He'll guide us through a few textual examples from his recent work with postwar absurdist drama and contemporary plays. Join us to learn more and ask questions.

December 1

We will discuss translation competitions. What makes a good translation competition? How should competitions for modern and classic texts differ? How can competition hosts recruit more participants? What is the best way to factor in AI into translation competitions? Come ready to talk any and all topics regarding competitions.

Please note that advance registration is required for each session. Click on the link below, then select the desired date from the pull-down menu. If you are interested but not sure you can make it, feel free to sign up and attend if you can. Participants are also free to arrive or depart while the session is in progress. We encourage you to register now.
