Translator Tuesday April 2026

These are casual virtual meetups to talk about translation, mainly between Japanese and English. We share experiences, questions, readings, strategies, tools, travails, and trivia, taking up new topics every time. New participants are most welcome! The hour-long sessions, moderated by Daniel Morales, start at 8:00 p.m. JST on the first Tuesday of the month. For brief reports of previous meetings, see here

April 7: At first, translation must seem very simple: Take one language and put it in another. However, the final form the text takes has major effects on how that text gets translated. This month, we'll be talking about how different media affect translation. The same sentence in a manga might be rendered very differently if it was published in a novel or recorded as a line in a video game or presented as part of an exhibit in a museum.

May 5: With Golden Week hitting at the start of May, we thought it might be helpful to discuss how translators take vacations. Or maybe, whether translators take vacations? For those freelancing or running their own company, it can be difficult to find time away from work. How do you handle weekends and other free time? Do you block off time to yourself and alert clients in advance?

Please note that advance registration is required for each session. Click on the link below, then select the desired date from the pull-down menu. If you are interested but not sure you can make it, feel free to sign up and attend if you can. Participants are also free to arrive or depart while the session is in progress. We encourage you to register now.
