Translator Tuesday June 2026

These are casual virtual meetups to talk about translation, mainly between Japanese and English. We share experiences, questions, readings, strategies, tools, travails, and trivia, with different conversations every time. New participants are most welcome! The one-hour sessions, moderated by Daniel Morales, start at 8:00 p.m. JST on the first Tuesday of the month. For brief reports of previous meetings, see here

June 2: In June we invite participants to bring a small section of translation (of roughly 150-300 characters) to workshop with the group. The goal will be to get feedback and share strategies, so feel free to bring something you’re struggling with or a section of a translation that you feel worked really well.

July 7: In July we'll discuss public domain literature and related laws. As of 2018, literary works enter the public domain 70 years after an author's death, but there are apparently some details that could prevent translation and publication. Come ready to discuss where to find these works, what’s available, and how one might go about getting them published if you do choose to translate a work in the public domain.

August 4: In August we are also looking for translation examples from participants but this time we invite you to share mistakes that “AI” has made. We’ll go over what the mistakes were and how human (expert) translators would have been able to avoid the mistakes.

Please note that advance registration is required for each session. Click on the link below, then select the desired date from the pull-down menu. If you are interested but not sure you can make it, feel free to sign up and attend if you can. Participants are also free to arrive or depart while the session is in progress. We encourage you to register now.
