These are casual virtual meetups to talk about translation, mainly between Japanese and English. We share experiences, questions, readings, strategies, tools, travails, and trivia, with different conversations every time. New participants are most welcome! The one-hour sessions, moderated by Daniel Morales, start at 8:00 p.m. JST on the first Tuesday of the month. For brief reports of previous meetings, see here. 

September 1: Translators do more than turn one language into another. They are often required to be cultural ambassadors for both the source text and the target text. Japanese authors may leave unconscious biases that the translator needs to recognize and consider, and translators must also be careful not to introduce their own assumptions into the English text they provide. This month we’ll discuss instances when we’ve had to do cultural exchange work during a translation.

October 6: For Translator Tuesday in 十月 (jūgatsu) we will be celebrating “自由月” and holding one of our “wild card” topics. We try to do this a few times each year as a way for participants to socialize and share whatever is currently on their minds. We look forward to seeing you online!
