June SWET Talk Shop: Translation Workshop Journalism
Date: June 17, 2015 (Wednesday)
Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Place: Books on Japan (library), Jinbocho, Tokyo; Use the A2 exit of Jinbocho subway station; turn left at street level and walk about 12 steps; look for the (very) small “Books on Japan” flag over the doorway and a narrow stairway leading up to the library on the second floor.
Fee: No fee will be charged.
RSVP: Please let us know if you are interested in participating by emailing us at Tokyo SWET Events
The workshop will begin at 6:00 with those who are early and proceed continuously. Feel free to bring your snack or bento to fortify yourself while we are working.
This workshop will focus on translation of journalistic texts—the various ways it's done, how to cope with typical problems, tricks of the trade. Those who indicate interest in contributing to the content of the workshop should send in a small sample text (of a piece of around 100-150 characters), their own translation, and, if available, the finished work after it has been edited for publication. Samples texts and translations are needed by June 14th.
Copies of the texts and translations will be shared (please choose or disguise anything so that it can be freely shared) and we'll discuss problems and consider various approaches and the process of bridging Japanese and English writing styles, rhetorical devices, etc.
Veterans with an instructive example to share or willing to comment on the samples, mid-career translators looking for new tips and ideas, and beginners eager for feedback and encouragement--all are welcome. Please let us know if you would like to be a contributing participant as early as possible at Tokyo SWET Events, but feel free to join in without advance notice.
