July 26 - Double Take: Translating Poetry and Children’s Literature Both Ways

Lecture by Arthur Binard, bilingual American poet, writer, translator. He will talk partly about translating children’s books and partly about translating poetry. Binard is winner of the Nakahara Chuya prize for poetry written in Japanese. He has columns in a number of periodicals including Iwanami Shoten’s widely-read monthly Tosho, and his poetry appears in the monthly opinion journal Chuo Koron in Japanese and ALC Magazine in English. Among his original books for children are: A Hopping Band, with illustrations by Dusan Kallay, Fukuinkan Shoten (2001), and Tropical Shopping Center, illustrated by Taku Furukawa, Froebel-kan (2002). Catch and Release, a collection of his poems in English, was published in 2002.

SWET Shorts will present a display of translations and books by the speaker.
