Translator of numerous works of Japanese literature including Sasameyuki (tr., The Makioka Sisters, 1957), Yukiguni (tr., Snow Country, 1956), and Genji monogatari (tr., The Tale of Genji, 1976), Seidensticker has written extensively not only on how he translates but on the city of Tokyo (High City, Low City and Tokyo Rising), and other topics. He will talk about his own approach to translation and touch on his recently published memoir, Tokyo Central (University of Washington Press, 2002).
