April 24 - Research Writing as an Individual Craft and Community Effort
Dr. Peter Matthews of the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, will introduce the newly published conference volume (P. J. Matthews and J. Akamine, eds, 2004, Research Writing in Japan) and talk about his experiences as a researcher in Japan and in-house editor at Minpaku. He will also discuss what he has learned through developing the Research Cooperative (an online meeting place for aspiring, experienced and professional research writers, editors, and translators; see www.researchco-op.co.nz) The 2003 Conference on Research Writing succeeded in bringing students, researchers, language professionals, and publishers together for face-to-face contact—for the first time in Japan and possibly for the first time in the world. Follow-up efforts will be suggested and audience opinions canvassed. Copies of the conference volume will be made available (free of charge).
