Designed for working professional and freelance translators, this workshop will focus on ways to get around sticky phrasing problems, expressions, and content that seems “untranslatable” at first glance; poor writing in the original text; and passages that need to be recast for an English-reading audience, etc. Emphasis will be on translating the meaning and intent of the author and on finding ways to edit and craft the text following rules of good English writing, with the purpose and audience of the translation always in mind.

Prior to the workshop, each participant will be asked to submit a text of 100 to 500 Japanese characters, plus a draft translation. Some short assignments will also be made to prepare in advance. At the workshop itself, participants will examine one another’s submissions as time allows, suggesting ways to overcome problems in the original, revise for better readability, and incorporate writing tricks for translated material. 

The instructor will offer a revised translation for each participant, either at the workshop or as follow-up.
