Come share an afternoon learning from renowned literary translator and university professor Juliet Winters Carpenter. Winner of the prestigious Japan-US Friendship Commission Prize for Translation of Japanese Literature, Juliet has a long list of published translations to her credit, including five published last year.
At SWET Kansai’s May meeting in Osaka, Juliet will talk about these translations and has also agreed to lead a workshop using as text an extract from her current (non-fiction) translation work-in-progress “I Design,” the memoirs of Academy Award-winning costume designer Ishioka Eiko. This will be not so much classroom exercise as an opportunity to find out how a professional approaches translation for publication and deals with the inevitable tricky issues.
Whether you’re an aspiring or experienced translator looking to learn some tips, an editor interested to know more about the translation process, or a general reader of translated works wondering how the job is done, this workshop will be a uniquely stimulating and informative opportunity. Materials will be distributed in advance to participants.
