Creative Translation Solutions

Share examples of knotty translation predicaments—literature that needs footnotes, client-invented locutions already set in stone, humor, allusions the English reader won’t get, talk about Japanese language and kanji in the text, oversentimentalism (“wet” writing)—and tell how they were resolved. Brief examples will be easier to cover in limited time. Please bring the Japanese original, the final version, and any alternatives you have access to. If you wish to submit an example beforehand, please write to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Bring examples on paper or on USB clip drive for computer projection on the screen.
Feel free to bring a sandwich or bento; discussion will start at 7:00.

Book Sale
Visitors to the Translators’ Cafe are invited to recycle some of the titles on your bookshelves by bringing and buying books to/from our small supply (we don’t have much room for storage). Those who bring books will receive credit at the door toward purchase of books already there or purchased at
future SWET book sales. Take this opportunity to buy your SWETshirts (all sizes available) and trendy SWET totebags (white and black) The book sale and SWETshirt/bag sale are fund-raising events for SWET. Those who would like to contribute books to the book sale in advance of the 26th should contact SWET events by June 21.

Send inquiries about the event to SWET events.
