SWET Tokyo Summer Garden Party and Lecture 2007

Date: July 21, 2007 (Saturday)
Time: 4:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m
Place: Musashi Sakai area (Chuo line; detailed directions will be sent to those who make reservations)
Fee: 2,000 yen
2,000 yen per person fee is to cover cost of beverages and honorarium. Reservations required by July 20; send to SWET events or fax 03-3430-1740

4:00-7:00 p.m.
Garden Party and Potluck Evening Picnic (supper served at 6:00) Join us in the garden and on the tatami of a 150-year old farmhouse under century-old trees in Musashi Sakai for an afternoon-evening of socializing followed by a lecture. Bring snacks, ingredients, or prepared dish to contribute to the fare (kitchen available). For an extra 1,000 yen, ask organizers to add your “potluck” and travel light. Drinks and utensils will be provided.

Summer Lecture: “Translating Another World: The Bakemono of Old Edo”
Adam Kabat (Professor, Musashi University)

Specialist on bakemono (monsters), yōkai (ghosts), and other fantastic figures harking back to the Edo period, Adam Kabat is author of numerous works in Japanese including Momongaa tai Mikoshinyudo: Edo no bakemonotachi [Momongaa vs. Mikoshinyudo: The Monsters of Edo; Kodansha, 2006]. He teaches literature at Musashi University. Kabat will introduce his research and talk about the problems of trying to translate the world of bakemono into English.
