In thirty years of cross-professional networking among English wordsmiths based in Japan, SWET members have left a unique trail and supported countless colleagues over the years. We come and go as members, but SWET has always been there for us; we hope it will be here for many more years ahead.

Now, in 2010, we look forward to the future. Where are we going? What is good with SWET? What challenges do we need to meet; what can we do better? Seven people, each with a unique viewpoint on what SWET is and the role it can play, will share their insights and ideas for our next decade.

  • James Baxter, director of the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies, Yokohama
  • Anne Bergasse, Abinitio Design, designer of the SWET Newsletter
  • Janine Beichman, professor of Japanese literature, Daito Bunka University, Tokyo
  • Juliet Winters Carpenter, translator and professor, Doshisha Women’s College, Kyoto
  • Andrew Horvat, Director, Stanford Center for Technology and Innovation, Kyoto; part-time instructor, Showa Women’s University
  • Mark Schreiber, writer and translator
  • Fred Uleman, translator, Japan Research, Inc.

Stimulated by the discussion and with a spread of good food and drink, we’ll then celebrate one of SWET’s great strengths—face-to-face networking. We look forward to seeing you there, for the sake of old times and new. Please join us!

If you know any former SWET members, potential members, or other fellow spirits who might enjoy this gathering, feel free to forward the information and invite them to come along.
