Working with Other People’s Words
Jiho Sargent, a long-time copyeditor as well as technical writer and editor, will present Working with Other People’s Words. The meeting will be a discussion of the types of tinkering that are included in the various stages of an editorial process and the factors that should underlie a decision to tinker with text or leave it alone. Those factors include not only the stage in the editorial process but also the nature of the text (single, named author vs. unidentified group; literature that involves stylistic concerns vs. procedural manuals that must value clarity over elegance; text that comes straight from the author vs. text that has undergone translation, for example).
