Japan’s English-language Periodicals
With institutional support for English-language periodicals based in Japan collapsing, a panel of veteran contributors to journals of the 1950s and 1960s will review the past and consider present conditions and future implications. Panelists will examine the past mission and role of major English journals in Japan, review landmark publications and their accomplishments, and consider the market for such periodicals. Taking a current view, they will consider the challenge of Internet publishing, noting how such publishing is supported and what kind of institutional backing it receives for financial, content, and production aspects, and will evaluate what has been lost and gained in recent years. In a break with SWET tradition, this is planned as a direct bilingual discussion without interpreters.
