Hitting a Niche Market
When Caroline Pover first came to Japan, she saw a dire need for information for Western women like herself. She decided to do something about that need and started up a magazine, the first issue which was a copied and stapled issue. Her story thereafter will be the topic of SWET’s February meeting.
Pover’s undertaking, Being A Broad, found its niche market and a small but enthusiastic readership. Within 10 issues, her magazine was transformed into a “proper” monthly magazine that was stocked in the English bookstores and had the backing of a loyal volunteer staff and advertisers and a distributor. After 18 months, the magazine ceased publication, and she switched over to a monthly e-newsletter. While she has no plans to revive her magazine, she has instead published a book, Being A Broad in Japan, addressing the same readership.
Pover will speak on starting up her magazine, the travails of publishing a periodical as well as a book for a niche market: not only Western women, but newcomers, both male and female, from other cultures as well. Come to learn from a SWET mover and shaker who has come a long way and who looks to the future for more adventures in her niche market.
