For our March SWET Shop Talk, the focus will be “editing” with particular interest in how SWET might compile and make available on its website a resource base of often-encountered quandaries (OEQs?), particularly in Japan-related work. We can make the SWET website be the place to go to get answers to such quandaries, assuring us more efficient use of our increasingly valuable time.
For example:
• What authority can we cite or what sort of logic can we present in support of our use of articles (a, the) when queried by a client? (Veterans will share their sources and statements.)
• When the client insists on using ALL CAPS for organization names, how would you persuade them that it is not necessary, for example, in running text? (Quote CMS, legal know-how, graphic-design insight, etc.)
• What would tell a client who has sent you a galley for “proofreading” with more than three hyphenated words per paragraph? (What the pro editors say and do.)
• What should one do in the face of a short research report with four levels of numbered subheadings? And so on.
What are your OEQs? May we share your answers or offer some from SWET’s vast store of know-how? March 18th will be a chance to get started on this project and make our lives easier using SWET resources and its website.
Not only editors and proofreaders, but translators, writers, and designers are needed to make this a resource an effective SWET tool!
The SWET Talk Shops are monthly opportunities for SWET members and visitors to meet face-to-face, network, consult each other, work on SWET-related projects (such as Wordcraft and website articles), and discuss ideas for enhancing the SWET community and contributing to its aims.
